For those of you with a 12-step background and certainly Alcoholics Anonymous, you will have heard this countless times in the preamble of AA. These three are foundational to the fellowship of our recovery and at the very foundation of who we are. These three direct us in what to share and what to rely on.

Whether they be natural or self-induced, stressors can be like trying to body surf in a riptide. If we don’t get out, we could drown.

Connected
When we were locked into our past life many of us pulled away from personal. Social and even intimate contact with others. We began to isolate on an emotional, mental and eventually (for many) on a physical level. Many of us became so frustrated, embarrassed and discouraged by who we had or were becoming we thought the best thing to do was to take a step back from people and things that were importation us.
As we entered into this new way of living we began to feel like we had something of value to offer. The walls began to come down and we once reverted to our need to make a connection.
The benefits of connecting
- Validates us as social creatures
- Creates a platform of sharing
- Gives us someone to share our hope with
- Opens us up to different perspectives
- Reminds us we are not alone
- We realize we are not unique
- Can Displace loneliness
- Can serve as a measurement for progress
- Can produce accountability

Tuesday Fix #31: Taking Personal Inventory Is Essential to My Recovery

Taking Personal Inventory Is Essential to My Recovery
Prior to my recovery journey, I didn’t care much to take an inventory. I didn’t like what was there. For me to become this transcendent person I need to incorporate things that were uncomfortable so I did not do them to incorporate things that were still uncomfortable but now I must do them. Taking a Personal Inventory not only allows me to clear away the negative debris from my past, but it also helps me take control of my present and even future. Here are some things that I suggested. You may have your own list. If you like this list but maybe not the order, then change the order.
At the end of the day, whether you do this list your own list or someone else’s list we must take a personal inventory if we are to expect recovery.
- Mandates honesty
- Keeps me aware of my comings and goings
- Helps me be more in control of my day
- It is my tool for getting things settled
- Relieves me of unwanted anxiety
- Helps me get to rest sooner
- Clears the way for me to have a more positive tomorrow
- Aids in helping others know they have value to me
- Frees me from any bondage that not doing these things can bring
- Empowers me to change from the things I find myself having to walk back, apologize or repair
- Help keep me aligned with my principals and my relationship with God
- Helps in the guiding others that look to me as an example of recovery
